Exactly what parameter are you automating? Is the Gross Beat instance assigned to the Master insert, or one of the others? If you put down notes on an instrument which does not go through gross beat, do you hear that instrument? What happens when you disable the gross beat instance? What happens when you take away the automation clip? Most importantly: Try letting the instrument play for 1 bar before activating Gross Beat. This question could use some more information.
